Publisher's note

This book is quite old (written 1930s), yet it's a perennial shining light amongst the plethora of channelled material available nowadays. Stewart and Betty White published several books in the 1930s, including The Betty Book, Across the Unknown and The Unobstructed Universe. The Gaelic Manuscripts was never properly published - also [it was] intentionally not copyrighted (unlike their other books).

This is perhaps because of the nature of the material. This book is written to assist people already at work on the path, when much channelled material tends variously to encourage people to start walking it. This book matched the level of other material such as that of Alice Bailey in the 1920s or Jane Roberts in the 1970s. This is why we publish it here.

One other reason for this re-publication is that such books as this have exerted an indirect formative, seminal influence on many New Age ideas of today - it pays to understand where many such ideas originated, since they are not as new as many people think. Though some of the forms of expression in this book can be a little dated or regarded nowadays as gender-biased, the observations and truths contained herein are all the same clearly put and very relevant in our time.

Warm thanks to Jessica BenDaniel of Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, for making this book available.

HTML Editor's note

There are certain typographical and page layout differences between the HTML files listed below and the MS Word original, from which they were derived. The reason for this is to maximize accessibility by making them as simple as possible. Therefore, the HTML coding is in deliberate compliance with the HTML 3.2 specification as recommended by the W3C.

Additionally, all "special characters" in the originals, not included in the basic ASCII keyboard character set, have been replaced with their standard ASCII counterparts; e.g. "hyphens" replace "em-dashes," if any, in the original text; "intelligent quotes," single and double, have been replaced by their standard ASCII keyboard counterparts; single-character ellipsis (...) have been replaced by a succession of three dots; and underlined emphasis in the text has been interpreted here as italics. Also, constructions of the kind, "this/that," if any, have been rendered as "this / that," in order to facilitate graceful word wrapping for unpredictably sized text blockes displayed upon unpredictably sized screens. For the same reason, "double dashes" (--) are replaced by a single hyphen.

The text itself is not letter-perfect. For one, there are indications the author intended to insert footnotes at certain points, for instance on page 9, as well as elsewhere. However, in the copy of the text from which this HTML rendering has been compiled, in most instances no corresponding footnotes appear. Such evidently purposeless asterisks (*), with the exception of the one just cited, are edited out of this edition of The Gaelic Manuscripts. Footnote indices with actually corresponding footnotes are linked to them, as in the instance of the just cited example. Another example appears on page 68. Otherwise, the HTML text has been compared, paragraph by paragraph, with its MS Word counterpart, and occasional typographical errors encountered in the text have been corrected, it is believed without altering any nuance in the original.

Although the original text does not bear page numbers, it is laid out on pages, and to facilitate locating quotes within this HTML rendering, it is felt useful to include a parenthetical notation of the form, [page N of 129] embedded in the HTML text, corresponding closely to page breaks in the original file. However, pagination is not in all cases exactly duplicated, because in the original file paragraphs sometimes straddle page breaks. It is felt, due to the nature of how HTML pages are displayed, that such page breaks should be inserted at the beginning, or at the end, of the paragraph in which they occur, instead of exactly where they occur within the original text. The picture is further complicated by the fact that the original file contains a couple or so extra blank pages, which in this rendering have been omitted, further altering the page numbering from that of the original file.

Warm appreciation to Steve Garcia of Chicago, Illinois, USA, for bringing The Gaelic Manuscripts to our attention, and for his editorial assistance.

Harmon
