"Dear Friends"

7 December 2006
Dear Friends,

There is an expansion of Metaconsciousness: Mythology for a Post-Civilized World V4.1.0, now available at http://harmonhouse.net/fdl/metacon/v4/metacon.html; consisting of an essay titled II.5. The Myth of Objective Reality. Into this single work I have poured more than the usual time and effort – as usual; but into this one, even more than that.

The essay is a long one, the major portion, but by no means all of which, is taken up with a subsection devoted to Cosmological Scale Expansion: a leading-edge cosmological theory under development by C. Johan Masreliez, Ph.D., which clarifies many vexing mysteries plaguing other contemporary cosmological models. There is a reason this may be important, even if you do not happen, personally, to be particularly interested in the cosmology of "where the universe came from," and "where it's headed."

I believe most readers of these messages will agree with me if I say that, as regards the circumstances of humans currently aboard Spaceship Earth, "Houston, we've got a problem." Only... there is no known "Houston" to hear our message, or to respond to it, and possibly help us out of our predicament. In the wide universe, so far as we know, "we're on our own," and we will either solve the human predicament on planet Earth ourselves, or most of us, or all of us, will most assuredly, sooner or later, "go down with the ship." Probably sooner than later, is my off-the-cuff guess.

To those who would accuse me of being an "old curmudgeon," or a "doomsayer," I must reply with a curt "There's no time anymore for optimism or pessimism; we must do what we can, while we can, and hope for the best." No one is obligated to believe me, of course, so whether anyone is listening or not, here, briefly, is what I have to say:

The human predicament is a product of human action; and human action is a product of human belief – what I call our myths. During the five-thousand-year tenure of what we smilingly call "civilization," we humans have engineered for ourselves (metaphorically speaking) a geometrically straight line of track of great length and of striking design, which terminates at the lip of a precipice (such as the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, to suggest a visual image). Right now, practically the entire human race on planet Earth is aboard an enormous train, steaming at full throttle toward the end of this line of track, and is scheduled to go arcing into empty space the moment it reaches the end of the line. The momentum of this train toward its exquisitely engineered destination is the product of human action, and unless human action changes, right speedily, in a fundamental way, the predictable outcome is as near to certain as any odds-maker may care to bet.

My point is simply this: human action follows from, does not lead, human belief; so if human belief does not change, with the best will in the world to the contrary, human action will not deviate by a single degree, left or right, from its present course, and the throttle will not be eased off, nor the brakes applied, even if everyone aboard has a clear view of our approaching doom. Therefore, a significant change in widespread human belief is urgently required among contemporary humans. My essay, The Myth of Objective Reality makes clear (I hope) that within the contemporary myth of "objective reality" lies rich latitude for wide variation in plausible human belief; and I think this is important, and worthy of your attention. Thank you.

The preceding is another edition of an accumulating collection of "Dear Friends" letters addressed to subscribers to the Freedom Digital Library distribution list. To subscribe, or unsubscribe, send an e-mail stating your wish to [address obfuscated], and I will add your e-mail address to, or subtract it from, the current distribution list.

The communications you receive from me via e-mail will be brief, will not include any attachments, and will (with possible minor exceptions) merely inform subscribers that there is new content available at the Freedom Digital Library; with a brief description of what it is, and were. That's about it.
